APACHE II

Recalibration of Apache II.

Scottish Intensive Care Units use APACHE II methodology (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation) to adjust for varying case-mix of patients admitted to each unit, prior to comparing unit outcomes.

Historically we have used the original diagnosis co-efficients described by Knaus et al (1985). New co-efficients based on Scottish data over the last 3-5 years have been created and have been used in monthly reporting to units since November 2012. The 2013 report 'Audit of Critical Care in Scotland' showed Standardised Mortality Ratios using both the standard and recalibrated APACHE II model.
